By Justin Cupler | December 4th, 2018

Chevy Camaro versus Ford Mustang: We can’t think of a more legendary head-to-head competition. These muscular sports cars are here for the Linwood, Michigan gearheads, but they also include versions that offer powertrains with impressive fuel economy without the massive performance penalties of yesteryear.

Which of these performance icons is the better buy for out Lindwood buyers? Keep reading to learn more.

Exterior

The 2019 Chevy Camaro and 2019 Ford Mustang feature modern-retro design languages that include cues from years past with modern touches. The Mustang takes on a more rounded design, while the Camaro is more angular with sharper body lines.

In terms of size, the Mustang and Camaro are very similar. The base Camaro measures 188.3 inches long, 74.7 inches wide, and 53.1 inches tall. It rides atop a 110.7-inch wheelbase, and has front and rear track widths of 62.5 and 63.7 inches, respectively. Base curb weight checks in at 3,354 pounds.

The base Mustang is 188.5 inches long, 75.4 inches wide, and 54.3 inches tall. Its wheelbase measures 107.1 inches while its front and rear tracks are 62.4 and 65.1 inches, respectively. The base 2019 Mustang weighs in at 3,542 pounds.

These measurements make the Camaro shorter and narrower than the Mustang, but its wheelbase is longer, giving it a more stable footprint. The Camaro is also almost 200 pounds lighter than the Mustang, making it nimbler in the corners. The 2019 Camaro’s smaller body also makes a slight difference in parking and cruising in and out of Linwood traffic.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Camaro

  • Longer wheelbase pushes wheels to the corners
  • 200-pound weight savings

Advantage: 2019 Ford Mustang

  • Longer, wider body opens more room
  • More retro styling cues
  • Wider tracks

Interior

Like the exterior, the 2019 Camaro and 2019 Mustang feature retro-modern interior designs, including rounded air vents, three-spoke steering wheels, simple dashboards, and more. Both also feature grippy seats and plenty of options to boost the luxury and sportiness of the interior.

Despite their similarities, the 2019 Camaro takes on a darker look when compared to the Mustang’s added colored trim pieces.

The Mustang gets the jump on the 2019 Camaro in front-seat roominess with its 45.1 inches of legroom and 56.3 inches of shoulder room, beating the Camaro by 1.2 and 1.3 inches, respectively. The Camaro does, however, beat the Mustang in front headroom, 38.5 inches to 37.6 inches.

In the rear, the 2019 Camaro shows off a roomier rear seat that offers 29.9 inches of legroom to the Mustang’s 29 inches.

Advantage: 2019 Chevrolet Camaro

  • Toned-down interior
  • Extra 0.9 inches of rear legroom
  • More front headroom

Advantage: 2019 Ford Mustang

  • More contrasting interior colors
  • Extra front legroom
  • More rear-seat headroom

Performance

The 2019 Chevy Camaro and 2019 Ford Mustang perform admirably, but there are distinct differences between them. The Camaro kicks off with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Buyers can upgrade to a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that injects 335 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque. The SS Camaro uses a 6.2-liter V-8 engine that punishes concrete with 455 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. Topping the 2019 Camaro range is the ZL1 model with its 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 powerplant that pushes out 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque.

Like the Camaro, the 2019 Ford Mustang has an array of engine options. It starts with a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that cranks out 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. The 2019 Mustang GT boasts a 5.0-liter V-8 powerplant that cranks out 460 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Jumping up to the special Mustang BULLITT, nets buyers the same 5.0-liter V-8 but with the power boosted to 480 horsepower.

This dizzying range of engines from both models can seem overwhelming, but they are similar. Sure, the Camaro’s base 2.0-liter engine lacks the top-end power of the Mustang’s 2.3-liter engine, but the Camaro’s 200-pound savings helps here. The Camaro’s 6.2-liter V-8 has a few less horsepower than the Mustang’s 5.0-liter, but it delivers 35 pound-feet more torque, leading to a faster in-seat feel and quicker acceleration.

In independent testing from Car and Driver, the V-6 and four-cylinder Camaro missed the acceleration mark the Mustang EcoBoost set by a few tenths of a second, but the difference is tiny. The SS Camaro, on the other hand, beat the Mustang GT by 0.3 seconds — 4 seconds versus 4.3 seconds — showing how important torque and weight savings really is.

Handling is much of the same as the base Mustang beats the Camaro on the skid pad 0.94 Gs to 0.89 Gs, but opting for the Camaro’s 1LE Package pushes this to 0.98 Gs. The Camaro SS, however, makes mincemeat of the Mustang GT at 0.98 Gs to 0.94 Gs. Add the 1LE Package, and the SS widens the gap to 1.05 Gs to 0.94 Gs.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Camaro

  • Lighter body
  • V-6 option
  • Big power from ZL1
  • Higher V-8 torque for better acceleration
  • SS tops 1 G on the skid pad

Advantage: 2019 Ford Mustang

  • Significant horsepower gap base model
  • Slight acceleration advantage in base model
