Chevy Traverse Vs. Honda Pilot: Style and Space to Spare

Large three-row crossovers have long dominated the people- and cargo-hauling space minivans once held. Chevy and Honda have a great pair of options in this class in the 2019 Traverse and 2019 Pilot. Both three-row crossovers have tons to offer, including great passenger and cargo room, but which is better for our Linwood area buyers? Find out below.

In 2018, the Chevy Traverse received a full redesign that rid it of its rounded body and replaced it with a more angular and modern look that suits this evolving class. With this new look also came a larger body that delivered more interior room and up to a 400-pound weight loss. This created a modern crossover that fit the needs of many buyers, and it remains that way in 2019.

The Pilot went through its last redesign in 2016, but it received a mild styling update for 2019 that included a retouched nose. Overall, the Pilot retains its buyer-friendly, neutral styling that offends no one. Like the Traverse, the Pilot meets the styling needs of a broad range of buyers, but some may find it a bit too vanilla.

Three-row crossovers are among the largest in the class, and the 2019 Traverse is no exception at 204.3 inches long, 78.6 inches wide, and 70.7 inches high. This larger body sits atop a 120.9-inch wheelbase. The Pilot is significantly shorter from nose to tail at 196.5 inches long, and it and narrower and lower at 78.6 inches wide and 70.6 inches high. This all rides on top of a 111-inch wheelbase.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Traverse

  • Sharper, more stylish body
  • Latest take on the large crossover

Advantage: 2019 Honda Pilot

  • More vanilla looks may fit some buyers better

Inside, the Chevy Traverse and Honda Pilot do great jobs combining style and functionality. They also include loads of standard tech. The 2019 Traverse comes standard with desirable features like 4G LTE Wi-Fi, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, tri-zone climate control, active noise cancellation, and more.

The 2019 Honda Pilot can’t quite match the Traverse’s standard features, but its standard 215-watt audio system and multi-angle rearview camera complement its range of standard safety features like automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control nicely.

Roominess is the name of the game for three-row crossovers, and the 2019 Chevy Traverse and 2019 Honda Pilot deliver in this area.

Up front, the 2019 Traverse offers 41.3 inches of headroom, 41 inches of legroom, 62.1 inches of shoulder room, and 58.1 inches of hip room. This beats the Pilot by 1.2 inches in headroom, and 0.1 inches in legroom and headroom. The Pilot comes back with 59.1 inches of hip room, which beats the Traverse by 1 inch.

In the second row, the 2019 Traverse offers 40 inches of headroom, 38.4 inches of legroom, 62.2 inches of shoulder room, and 56.9 inches of hip room. This matches the Pilot’s legroom and beats it in shoulder room by 0.2 inches. The Pilot gets the better of the Traverse by 0.2 inches of headroom and 0.4 inches in hip room.

In the third row, things tighten up with the Traverse offering 38.2 inches of headroom, 33.5 inches of legroom, 57.5 inches of shoulder room, and 48.5 inches of hip room. This beats the Pilot by 1.6 inches in legroom and 3.9 inches in hip room, but the Pilot has an extra 0.7 inches of headroom and 1.1 inches of shoulder room.

Cargo room is an important factor in buying a larger crossover like the Traverse and Pilot, and both models perform well. With all three rows of seats upright, the Traverse has 23 cubic feet of space for cargo, which beats the Pilot by 7.5 cubes. With the third row folded, the Traverse offers 58.1 cubic feet, which beats the Pilot by 11.3 cubes. Finally, with all three rows folded, the Traverse swallows up to 98.2 cubic feet, crushing the Pilot by 14.3 cubes.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Traverse

  • More standard tech
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard
  • More passenger and cargo room

Advantage: 2019 Honda Pilot

  • Tons of standard safety equipment
  • Smart features like in-cabin PA system

These larger crossovers generally use V-6 engines, but the Traverse throws an extra wrinkle into the class with a turbo four-cylinder option. Its base engine is a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that produces 310 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. This pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission that ships power to the front wheels. All-wheel drive is optional.

The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is available only in the RS trim with front-wheel drive. This engine cranks out 257 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This engine also pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission. If you want the RS with all-wheel drive, you can only get the V-6 engine.

The 2019 Honda Pilot uses a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that cranks out 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. This pairs with a standard six-speed automatic transmission, but the Touring and Elite trims get a nine-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard on all trim levels except the Elite, which comes with standard all-wheel drive.

Towing isn’t generally a make-or-break spec in the crossover segment, but some buyers will look to it as a tie-breaker. The 2019 Traverse can tow up to 5,000 power with its V-6 engine, but the four-cylinder unit causes the capacity to plummet to 1,500 pounds. The 2019 Honda Pilot can tow up to 3,500 pounds with front-wheel drive and 5,000 pounds with all-wheel drive.

Fuel economy is not necessarily a focus for larger crossovers like these, but it can play a role in the decision-making process for buyers with longer daily commutes. The Traverse and Pilot offer similar fuel-economy ratings. The standard 2019 Chevy Traverse gets up to 18 mpg city, 27 highway, and 21 combined. The RS model with the four-cylinder engine turns in ratings of up to 20 mpg city, 26 highway, and 22 combined. The base 2019 Pilot gets up to 19 mpg city, 27 highway, and 22 combined. Opting for the Elite or Touring trims with the nine-speed automatic transmission gets up to 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Traverse

  • More standard power
  • Optional turbocharged four-cylinder
  • Standard nine-speed transmission
  • Higher base towing capacity

Advantage: 2019 Honda Pilot

  • Slight fuel-economy advantage
