Chevy Suburban Vs. Cadillac Escalade: Big SUV Battle

By Justin Cupler | December 16th, 2018

The full-size SUV segment remains a popular one despite the arrival of countless smaller crossovers. Two big-time players in this segment are the 2019 Chevy Suburban and the 2019 Cadillac Escalade. They are closely related, but the Escalade takes on a more luxurious approach and a significantly higher price tag. Which vehicle is the better choice for your commute to Standish or to see family in Bay City? Keep reading to find out.

Exterior

The 2019 Chevy Suburban and 2019 Cadillac Escalade are massive people haulers based on the same platform. With exception of their front end, rear end, and badges, these two SUVs are virtually identical. The big difference is the Escalade is a legit luxury cruiser with tons more premium features.

These premium features, which include standard 20-inch chrome wheels, LED headlights and taillights, tinted glass, chrome moldings, chrome roof rails, and more, waste little time grabbing buyers’ attention. The Suburban can have a look nearly as luxurious as the base Escalade, but it requires tons of options.

The 2019 Suburban is available in just one body style that measures 224.3 inches long, 80.5 inches wide, and 74.4 inches high. This big two-box body rides atop a 130-inch wheelbase.

The 2019 Escalade is available in a smaller standard body that matches the Suburban’s little bro, the Tahoe, and a longer ESV model that mimics the Suburban’s measurements. The 2019 Cadillac Escalade’s body measures 203.9 to 224.3 inches long, 80.5 inches wide, and 74 inches high. Its wheelbase is 116 inches in its standard format and 130 inches in its ESV body.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Suburban

  • More conservative styling
  • Plenty of options to dress it up

Advantage: 2019 Cadillac Escalade

  • Premium features are standard
  • Two size options

Interior

Like the exterior, the Suburban and Escalade’s shared bones are obvious with a little attention to detail. But again, the 2019 Cadillac Escalade sets itself apart with loads of standard premium features like leather upholstery, 12-inch driver information center, 16-speaker audio system, and 360-degree camera. Sure, there are loads of options to dress up the Suburban to make it close to the base Escalade, but its Chevy cousin can never keep up with this luxury SUV.

Up front, the 2019 Chevy Suburban has 42.8 inches of headroom, 45.3 inches of legroom, 64.8 inches of shoulder room, and 60.8 inches of hip room. The 2019 Escalade is identical other than its extra 0.1 inches in hip and shoulder room.

In its second row, the 2019 Suburban offers 39.1 inches of headroom, 39.7 inches of legroom, 65.1 inches of shoulder room, and 60.3 inches of hip room. With its two body styles, there is some variation in the 2019 Escalade’s second-row measurements; they offer 38.7 to 39.1 inches of headroom, 39 to 39.7 inches of legroom, 65.1 inches of shoulder room, and 60.3 inches of hip room.

In its third row, the Suburban has 38.5 inches of headroom, 34.5 inches of legroom, 62.6 inches of shoulder room, and 49.3 inches of hip room. Like in the second row, the Cadillac Escalade’s third row varies with the body style. Its third-row measurements are 38.1 to 38.5 inches of headroom, 24.8 to 34.5 inches of legroom, 62.6 inches of shoulder room, and 49.3 inches of hip room.

While people are the focus to these SUVs, cargo room is a close second. The 2019 Chevy Suburban offers 39.3 cubic feet with all three rows upright, 76.7 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 121.7 cubic feet with all three rows folded.

The Escalade’s two sizes lead to a range of cargo capacities. With all three rows up, it has 15.2 to 39.3 cubic feet of cargo room. Drop the third row, and the cargo area expands to 51.6 to 76.7 cubic feet. With all rear rows folded, the Escalade has 94.2 to 120.9 cubic feet.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Suburban

  • Tons more standard cargo room
  • More max cargo room
  • More seating room as standard

Advantage: 2019 Cadillac Escalade

  • Gobs of luxurious features
  • Choose the room you actually need

Performance

Under the skin, there are plenty of similarities between the 2019 Suburban and the 2019 Escalade, but the Suburban starts off with a smaller 5.3-liter V-8 engine that injects 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive is an option.

Optional in the Suburban and standard in the 2019 Escalade is a 6.2-liter V-8 powerplant that ships out 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs to a 10-speed automatic transmission and standard rear-wheel drive in both SUVs. Four-wheel drive is available as an option.

With its base engine, the EPA rates the 2019 Chevy Suburban at up to 15 mpg city, 22 highway, and 18 combined. With the 6.2-liter V-8, the Suburban and Escalade receive EPA-estimated ratings of up to 14 mpg city, 23 highway, and 17 combined.

Towing is no problem for either vehicle, as the 2019 Suburban can tug along 8,000 to 8,300 pounds, and the 2019 Escalade can haul 7,900 to 8,300 pounds.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Suburban

  • Slightly better towing
  • Tiny fuel-economy boost

Advantage: 2019 Cadillac Escalade

  • More base power
  • Standard 10-speed transmission
