Chevy Silverado 1500 Vs. Ford F-150: New Looks, Same Classic Pickup Battle

By Justin Cupler | October 18th, 2018

There are tons of legendary pickups in the full-size segment, including the Chevy Silverado 1500 and the Ford F-150. The 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2018 Ford F-150 have plenty of engine, cab, and trim options for a variety of buyers, but which one is the best choice for our Bay City, Linwood, and Standish, Michigan truck shoppers? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 boasts a brand-new look thanks to a comprehensive redesign. This update includes a more upright front end with all-new headlights and a new Trail Boss model with a higher ride height and a rugged look. Though it is up to 1.6 inches longer than the previous model, the 2019 Silverado 1500 is also up to 450 pounds lighter.

Like the Silverado, the Ford F-150 recently went through a huge redesign, but it happened back in 2015. This look is still fresh, but it is nowhere near as modern as the Silverado’s. The F-150 started the weight-loss kick for the segment with its aluminum bed and other weight-saving measures. Like the Silverado, the F-150’s redesign did not take away from its pickup-truck styling.

The 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 measures 210.7 to 241.2 inches long, 81.2 inches wide, and 75.4 to 78.5 inches high. It rides on a wheelbase that ranges from 126.5 to 157.1 inches. The 2018 F-150’s measures 209.3 to 250.5 inches long, 79.9 inches wide, and 75.1 to 77.3 inches high.

The F-150 has a smaller regular-cab model, making it easier to maneuver, while its longer SuperCab model with the 8-foot bed offers more room for passengers and cargo.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500

  • Latest in pickup-truck design
  • Huge weight loss

Advantage: 2018 Ford F-150

  • Smaller and easier to handle in the smallest format

Interior

In every cab setup, the 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500’s front seats offer 43.1 inches of headroom, 44.5 inches of legroom, 66.1 inches of shoulder room, and 61.2 inches of hip room. The F-150’s front seats offer 40.8 inches of headroom, 43.9 inches of legroom, 66.7 inches of shoulder room, and 62.5 inches of hip room. This gives the Silverado an advantage of 2.3 inches in headroom and 0.4 inches in legroom, but the F-150 takes shoulder room by 0.6 inches and hip room by 1.3 inches.

The 2019 Silverado 1500 Double Cab is roughly the equivalent of the Ford F-150 SuperCab. The Silverado 1500’s rear seats offer 39.9 inches of headroom and 35.2 inches of legroom, 64.9 inches of shoulder room, and 60.2 inches of hip room. The Ford F-150 SuperCab’s rear seats get a 0.4-inch advantage at 40.3 inches of headroom, but its 33.5 inches of rear legroom is 1.7 inches less than the Chevy.

The 2019 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab’s rear seats offer 40.1 inches of headroom, 43.4 inches of legroom, 65.2 inches of shoulder room, and 60.2 inches in hip room. The 2019 Silverado comes up short in every measurable as the F-150 offers 40.4 inches of headroom, 43.6 inches of legroom, 65.9 inches of shoulder room, and 64.7 inches of hip room.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500

  • Front seats better suited for tall people
  • More double-cab legroom

Advantage: 2018 Ford F-150

  • Larger Crew Cab rear seat

Performance

The 2019 Silverado 1500 and 2019 Ford F-150 engine lineups have V-6 and V-8 engines available, but they are distinguished by the Silverado’s available turbocharged four-cylinder option and the F-150’s turbocharged V-6 option.

The 2019 Chevy Silverado’s engine lineup starts with a 4.3-liter V-6 engine that produces 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. This V-6 powerplant pairs with a standard six-speed automatic transmission.

Moving to the midrange engines drops a 5.3-liter V-8 engine into the Silverado 1500 that injects 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. Next up is a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque. The 5.3- and 2.7-liter engines pair to the same eight-speed automatic transmission.

Topping the range is a 6.2-liter V-8 with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque and pairs with a 10-speed automatic transmission. There will be a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel engine available later in the 2019 model year, but the details are not available yet.

The 2018 Ford F-150 comes standard with a 3.3-liter V-6 engine that injects 290 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. This V-6 pairs to a standard six-speed automatic transmission.

Moving up one notch is the 2.7-liter EcoBoost turbocharged V-6 that cranks out 325 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. Buyers seeking more V-6 power can get the turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 with 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. These turbocharged V-6 engines pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Moving into the V-8 segment adds a 5.0-liter engine with 395 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. The F-150 lineup also offers the Raptor model that uses a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine that pumps out 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. These engines ship power through a 10-speed automatic transmission.

For those seeking a combination of torque and fuel economy, the 2018 F-150 also offers an optional 3.0-liter PowerStroke diesel engine with 250 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. This diesel unit uses the same 10-speed automatic transmission as the optional V-6 and V-8 engines.

Fuel economy numbers are still in the works for the 2019 Silverado 1500, but there are preliminary numbers on select powertrains. The V-6, four-cylinder, and diesel engines do not have official EPA numbers yet, but the 5.3-liter V-8 delivers up to 17 mpg city, 23 highway, and 19 combined, while the 6.2-liter gets up to 16 mpg city, 20 highway, and 17 combined.

The 2018 Ford F-150’s base V-6 fuel economy checks in at 20 mpg city, 25 highway, and 22 combined. The 2.7-liter engine pushes fuel economy to up to 20 mpg city, 26 highway, and 22 combined. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost gets up to 18 mpg city, 25 highway, and 21 combined. The 5.0-liter V-8 engine matches the Silverado’s 5.3-liter engine at up to 17 mpg city, 23 highway, and 19 combined. Finally, the 3.0-liter diesel V-6 boosts fuel economy as high as 22 mpg city, 30 highway, and 25 combined.

When buying a pickup truck, payload and towing capacities mean a lot. The Silverado can tow up to 12,200 pounds (Crew Cab with four-wheel drive) and haul up to 2,280 pounds of payload (regular cab with two-wheel drive). The Ford F-150 has an advantage over the Silverado with its 13,200-pound max towing capacity and 3,270-pound max payload capacity.

The F-150 and Silverado 1500 satisfy off-road enthusiasts with their respective trail-focused models. The 2019 Silverado has two packages, starting with the Z71 that includes Rancho monotube shocks, electronic hill-descent control, two-speed transfer case, locking rear differential, front skid plates and heavy-duty air cleaner. The Trail Boss model adds a 2-inch lift to the Z71 package.

The F-150 boasts the FX4 package that includes electronic-locking rear differentials, hill-descent control, off-road-tuned shocks, and three skid plates. For extreme off-road battling, there is the F-150 Raptor, which adds the high-output 3.5-liter V-6 engine, unique cloth seats, Fox racing shocks, off-road tires, specific body styling, and much more.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500

  • Four-cylinder option
  • Significantly higher V-6 torque
  • Higher peak V-8 horsepower

Advantage: 2018 Ford F-150

  • More V-6 horsepower
  • Advanced Raptor off-road package
  • Dizzying number of engine options
  • More max payload and towing
