Chevrolet Blazer Vs. Ford Edge

By Justin Cupler | September 20th, 2019

Compact crossovers give our Standish area shoppers a manageable footprint and a car-like ride combined with a roomy cabin and cargo area. Two greats in this class are the 2019 Chevy Blazer and the 2019 Ford Edge. Which is better for you, our Standish, Bay City, and Linwood areas? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The 2019 Chevy Blazer rolls in with a bold styling statement that makes a huge mark in the compact crossover segment. It boasts a Camaro-inspired nose with thin headlights and large, black grille. Finishing off its stunning looks are sharp body lines, a “floating” roof, and a forward-leaning rear hatch. Further sporting up the design is the RS package with its black emblems, rocker panels, and wheels.

The Ford Edge also features a bold design, but it is timid next to the eye-grabbing Blazer. This calmer look appeals to a broader range of buyers but does little to evoke the same excitement as the Blazer. Moving into the Edge ST brings the style up a notch with its black accents, Bold ST grille, sharp wheels, and more.

The Edge is 2.6 inches shorter and 0.8 inches narrower than the Blazer, giving buyers who frequent tight city streets a more manageable footprint. In its highest trim levels, the Ford Edge is up to 215 pounds heavier than the Blazer, which shows in its straight-line acceleration.

Measurement Chevy Blazer Ford Edge Difference
Length 191.4 inches 188.8 inches +2.6 inches
Width 76.7 inches 75.9 inches +0.8 inches
Height 67 inches 68.3 inches -1.3 inches
Wheelbase 112.7 inches 112.2 inches +0.5 inches
Ground Clearance 8 to 8.2 inches
Curb weight 3,810 to 4,246 pounds 3,959 to 4,477 pounds -231 to +215 pounds

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Blazer

  • Eye-grabbing good looks
  • Lighter in its higher trims
  • Sporty RS trim

Advantage: 2019 Ford Edge

  • More traditional looks
  • Sporty ST body

Interior

Like its exterior, the 2019 Chevy Blazer boasts a wild interior with a shapely dash, circular air vents, available metallic trim, a stubby gear shifter, available red stitching, and much more. It is also well-equipped with standard Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system with an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth audio streaming, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 4G LTE Wi-fi, active noise, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The 2019 Ford Edge’s cabin is far more toned down than the Blazer’s, as it features a traditional-looking dash, vents, and seats. It does, however, boast a few unique bits like its rotary shifter. The ST trim takes things up a notch with its exclusive infotainment splash screen, leather seats with Miko inserts, and larger seat bolsters. The Edge matches the Blazer’s standard Wi-Fi but falls short in most other interior tech with its standard 4.2-inch central screen and lack of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

While it lacks the fun technology, the Edge boasts tons of standard safety gear, including automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Ford MyKey, and post-collision braking.

In cabin room, the Ford Edge beats the Blazer in every key measurable. Its biggest wins include an additional 3.3 inches of hip room and up to an extra 9.2 cubic feet of cargo room.

Measurement Chevy Blazer Ford Edge Difference
Front headroom 39.8 inches 40.2 inches -0.4 inches
Front legroom 41 inches 42.6 inches -1.6 inches
Front shoulder room 59.1 inches 60.3 inches -1.2 inches

Rear hip room 54.2 inches 57.5 inches -3.3 inches
Cargo room (with rear seats upright) 30.5 cubic feet 39.2 cubic feet -8.7 cubic feet
Cargo room (with rear seats folded) 64.2 cubic feet 73.4 cubic feet -9.2 cubic feet

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Blazer

  • Standout interior design
  • Even sportier RS cabin
  • Tons of excellent tech comes standard
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard

Advantage: 2019 Ford Edge

  • More traditional interior design
  • Loads of standard advanced safety equipment
  • Roomier interior
  • Massive cargo area for its class

Performance

The Chevy Blazer comes standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 193 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission that delivers power to the front wheels only. This powertrain delivers up to 21 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined.

The Ford Edge’s base powertrain is a more potent 250-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. This powertrain delivers a 7.6-second 0-to-60-mph time and up to 22 mpg city, 29 highway, and 25 combined.

The Blazer’s optional engine is a 3.6-liter V-6 that pumps out 308 horsepower and 270 pound-feet. The Edge’s optional engine is a 2.7-liter turbocharged V-6 that injects 335 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. This engine is only available in the performance-oriented ST trim and delivers a 6.1-second 0-to-60-mph time. While this is quick, the lighter V-6-equipped Blazer matches this sprint time without the complex turbocharged engine.

Towing superiority varies based on which version of each model you consider. With the base engine, the front-wheel-drive Blazer and Edge tow the same 1,500 pounds. The base Edge with all-wheel drive can tug up to 3,500 pounds, while the Blazer lacks optional all-wheel drive with the base four-pot.

Moving into the 3.6-liter V-6, the all-wheel-drive Blazer can haul up to a 4,500-pound trailer, beating the Edge ST by 1,000 pounds. With its standard front-wheel drive, the V-6-equipped Blazer can haul just 1,500 pounds.
